How overtime pay is calculated
Overtime is paid at a higher rate than your regular wage. The most common rule is "time and a half" — 1.5× your normal hourly rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. This calculator shows the rate, the extra pay, and your total.
- Overtime rate = hourly wage × overtime multiplier
- Overtime pay = overtime rate × overtime hours
- Total pay = regular pay + overtime pay + double-time pay
Common overtime multipliers
- 1.5× — standard time and a half in the US, Canada and many contracts.
- 2× — double time, often for holidays or hours beyond a daily limit.
- 1.25× or 1.33× — used by some employers and countries.
Know your rights
Overtime rules vary by country, state and employment classification. In the US, federal law requires overtime for non-exempt employees after 40 hours a week, and some states, such as California, also require daily overtime. Check your contract or local labor department for the rules that apply to you.
